The waters around the Farne's are still a dangerous place for shipping and water vessels. Many wrecks are littered around the seabed between Bamburgh and Beadnell.
The most famous story in the area is of the Forfarshire, and the saving of some of her crew by the daughter of the lighthouse keeper - Grace Darling, who's desendants still live in the area. The Grace Darling museum is located in Bamburgh. The Olde Ship Hotel also has the famed signboard from the vessel, along with a host of other interesting maritime equipment.

The most popular wreck for diving is the Somali. The 6810 tonne passenger-cargo steamer was bound for Hong Kong in 1941, when it was bombed by a German Heinkel 111. The boat rests upright in 30m of water off Beadnell.
